Stay-Focused's Nineteenth Program

June 23 - 29, 2010

Stay-Focused Conducts Nineteenth Program!

This was the first program of 2010 and the second summer running our programs at the Grand Cayman Marriott. Once again, Walter Regidor, the General Manager, and his staff were exceptionally gracious in hosting our visit. This summer Walter accepted a new position within the Marriott organization in Peru and we wish Walter and his family all the very best. Walter - we will miss you!

Stay-Focused Divers

Our group included six, first-time divers and Stay-Focused alumna, Gail Gaeng, who served as the mentor for the group. The divers are: Joey Bedwell, Tyler Drake, Sydney Nicholas, Susannah Scaroni, Zach Smith, and Amber Weber.

Leading the Program

Joining the group: Roger Muller, Founder/President of Stay-Focused; JenFu Cheng, medical advisor and photographer extraordinaire; Gregg Chalmers, who has coached teens with disabilities for many years; Stay-Focused alum Ryan Chalmers; and our core Diving Instructors: Marty Banks, Chris Brandson, Tony Chisholm, and Nick Lawton. Many thanks to JenFu who "upped" his game this year and got much more involved in instructing our first-time divers.

Responsibility Code

As part of each trip, we either create or revisit our Responsibility Code, which simply outlines the rules of conduct we all agree to abide by during our time together. Here's what the group agreed to:

1. Be on time
2. Keep everything clean
3. Be respectful of sponsors - and appreciative
4. Be responsible for your dive gear
5. Stay hydrated!
6. Stay positive!
7. Leave no man behind

Overall, the group did an excellent job respecting the tenets of the Responsibility Code they crafted. Congratulations!

DIVER

On each trip, we assign words to each letter of the acronym DIVER that reflect the collective opinion of the group. Here are the words chosen by this group.

D Determination
I Integrity
V Valiant
E Empowering
R Rain

This group was indeed determined, maintained complete integrity throughout the process, remained valiant at all times, felt empowered by their achievement, and laughed in the face of the rain and less than hospitable Cayman weather!

Goals for 2010

Before leaving Cayman, each member of the group committed to achieving a personal goal that is realistic, achievable, and measurable. So, here they are:

Amber: "B" standard in 100 meter (next week); "A" standard in 200 meter.

Joey: Get all AP assignments done by August 15th, with "As."

Susannah: Set personal records in the 100-, 200-, 400-, and 800-meter races.

Sydney: 3.0 GPA by December 2010.

Tyler: Get driver's license by August 2010. Back to crutches by December 2010.

Zach: Three "As" in school work by December 2010.

So there you have it - on record. Good luck to each of you in achieving your goals!
